- Member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa.
- Member of Lambda Chi social fraternity.
- Graduated at the top of his class from John Marshall High School in 1958.
- Graduated from University of Virginia School of Law in 1965.
- Practiced law in Richmond for more than 50 years.
- Elected to the American College of Trial Lawyers.
- Named Virginia’s top civil litigator in 2005 by Virginia Business Magazine.
- Selected as one of The Best Lawyers in America for Civil Litigation.
- Recognized as No. 1 by Virginia Super Lawyers in 2009.
- Served on the 4th Circuit Judicial Conference.
- Along with his wife Ann, established the first athletic endowment in 2007. Following their leadership, 18 additional endowments have been created.
- Created Academic Endowment at RMC to fund scholarships for Richmond area students, known as Allen Scholars.
- Awarded Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from RMC in 2012.
- An RMC legacy family, son Jamie Allen and granddaughter Anna Grace Schmitt are graduates.
- Along with his wife Ann, was selected as a 2014 Lifetime Achievement in Philanthropy honoree by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
- Passed away in 2017 at the age of 76.
